Vencedor, Best Narrative and HORIZON ZERO DAWN: The Sunhawk out now!

Two good newses for the price of one! HORIZON ZERO DAWN: THE SUNHAWK, the graphic novel collecting the first arc of the HORIZON ZERO DAWN comic book series, came out last week. In addition, HOLOCRIMES, a mobile AR game to which I contributed my writing skillz, won Best Narrative at the Brazilian SB Games Festival.

Horizon Zero Dawn Sunhawk cover with Talanah and AloyTitan Comics published HORIZON ZERO DAWN: THE SUNHAWK to collect the best-selling comic series into a graphic novel. The original Issue #1, which came out in August, was the top selling non-Marvel comic, outselling Batman! It’s also Titan’s best-selling comic ever! Featuring Talanah, the Sunhawk of the Hunters Lodge, the complete tale recounts what happens to Aloy’s friend Talanah after the events of the first game. The collection is barely a week old, so you’re not too late to pick up a copy. With art from Ann Maulina, and colors from Bryan Valenza, it’s definitely worth a peep!

Not to be outdone, HOLOCRIMES: AR INVESTIGATION took home the trophy for Best Narrative at SBGames Recife 2020, the Festival Virtual de Jogos. The game, developed by Brazilian developer Black River Studios, puts the player at the scene of a crime, in a grounded science fiction world where murders might hint at a greater conspiracy.

🏆 Vencedor Melhor Narrativa

HOLOCRIMES also earned nominations in Best Design, Best Tech, and Best Mobile Game. Congrats to the whole team!

A Serious Prize: Tunnel Tail Game Wins!

Woot! A game I wrote for earned a Silver Medal at the 2013 International Serious Play Awards!  Tunnel Tail follows a group of mice as they struggle to overthrow the dark forces ready to take down both the mice and human worlds.  Naturally a true story (kidding), Tunnel Tail is more than a fantasy adventure, it has a serious component: helping combat addiction.  It’s an award I’m actually pretty proud of, considering that other award a project of mine won.

Although I work primarily in entertainment, you may not know that I also have a Skills Certificate in Chemical Dependency.  Thus, working on the project provided the perfect storm of creativity and knowledge.  My contribution ended up being “so integral to the learning component,” said a producer on the title.

The game has also been rated highly by players, so it can’t be all bad 😉  Check out the game for free! on iOS or Android.

Writing LOST GIRL: THE GAME

Anna Silk as BoThe hit Syfy series LOST GIRL recently launched their first mobile game for iOS and Android, called, plainly enough, LOST GIRL: THE GAME.  If you’re reading this, you’ve already figured out the second part: I was the writer.  Even better, I wrote it with one of the show’s writers.  A TV series that actually cares about a game being in the show’s canon?  True transmedia? Madness! Next thing you know, it’ll be all the rage! At least on Syfy.

Here’s a brief description of the game story:

Something is not right in the City: While the Light and Dark Fae continue to focus on their bitter rivalry, an ancient power is stirring, a great evil that will stop at nothing to step foot again and wreak havoc on the earth, and only you can help stop it!

Lost Girl: The Game is a completely free mystery-style hidden object game based on the hit TV series Lost Girl. Making your way to the famed Dal Riata, a neutral ground and waystation for the supernatural creatures known as the Fae, you are drawn into a tale of intrigue and power.

LOST GIRL is not the first Canadian Syfy series I’ve written a game for. I acted as the first head writer for STARGATE WORLDS, the ill-fated MMOG based on the long-running Syfy series STARGATE SG-1. The Lost Girl game was a lot of fun to work on, because I got to read all the scripts, just like I did working on STARGATE WORLDS.

With STARGATE, DEFIANCE, and now LOST GIRL, which series do you think is next for a game adaptation?
